Tuesday 11th April and were off to our 1st call of the day, a new TV aerial Mill Green Ingatestone Essex. It was a typical April day wet! And as always in the rain the roofs are nearly always slate which just adds to the fun of getting up to the chimney stack. Slate in the rain is like ice you really do need to think where you’re going to place your feet. To make things just a little more fun the beautiful cottage had 3 cables crossing over the front which made getting the large roof climbing ladder on the roof difficult.

With 2 of us we were able to have one of us keeping the bottom of the roof climber on the floor while I navigated the top hook of the ladder through the cables until we could stand it upright to lift on to the roof safely. Once on the roof I cut down the old aerial and removed the perished cable. On inspection the chimney stack looked ok to lash and give a good support for our new TV aerial.

We have these new lashing kits now where one end is already to go which I think is utterly swish! Less for me to do the cottage was surrounded by woods and although I knew the signal would be strong I decided to go with a DMX10 as we were running 2 TV points. Choosing which way the chimney cradle would lay and which corner would be best, need looking at as in April the trees had no leafs. I did not want my customers having problems in the summer so I found the best line of sight and lashed the chimney using a 13” 5 brick course chimney cradle. We fixed the Blake DMX10 w/b aerial on to an 8ft 1” ½ alloy mast to ensure plenty of height for the surrounding trees.

The DMX10 brought in a lovely signal all 6 digital mux’s were low on noise, square and a good 46db on all. I fitted a combined inductive low loss splitter -4db on each leg leaving both TV points 42db of digital signal each, perfect! Happy Andy, happy customers! The cottage had white render so I used white cable to minimise the presence of the cable, as long as the cable runs were straight and level they would not look out of place and not catch your eye’s attention.

Once we brought the cables inside the cottage we soon had the cables connected to the TV’s and looked at our perfect pictures, our customers were delighted. We wrote our bill cleared up and set off to Chelmsford for our next call.
