I was called out yesterday by one of my customers who I have worked for in the past and look after their TV system. They had suffered a massive power surge and lost their system all 3 sky boxes were not working and the aerial for free-view was down too. The type of system my customer has is not something I generally get involved with, but of the summer of 2012 I had some time and took on the challenge of getting it working as it did not function very well, and the company who installed it did not appear to want to return. As a rule I do not work with sound and do not wish to but I enjoyed connecting it up and getting the TV’s around the house working. It took my hours alone getting all the cables the same length and fitting connections to them and making it possible to wheel out the cabinet which houses the equipment so cables can be accessed. With the heat generated by the unit air-con would be a good idea keeping the environment temperature correct. I never understand why installers choose to install a system in the middle of the house where running new cables (replacement or additional) is extremely difficult or near impossible as the system is housed in the middle of the house, not by an external wall where entry and exit of anything additional or any replacement cables can be done easily.

When I started investigating why nothing was working I was rather puzzled and I’m still thinking about it now. The aerial was fine but the Sky+HD box was not letting it flow through to the diplexer or distribution amp, I bypassed everything and put my aerial signal into my 16way digital ir distribution amp to see if the amp had popped, I was pleased to find the distribution amp was fine, so I back tracked to the diplexer which you can put 4 sky boxes into and only have one cable out carrying digital free-view and 4 analogue channels for each remote sky box, which was not allowing signal to flow through. I had one on my van so I replaced it and performed a system reset on the Sky+ HD boxes to see if they would reset and allow the digital free-view signal to flow through once more, and luckily enough the fired up and worked again.

One of the Sky+HD boxes was not connected to the internet and my customer wanted it to be so having a drum of cat5 cable on my van I made an Ethernet lead and connected it to a free port of the switch in the cabinet and bingo the box now had on demand iplayer etc. I spoke with my customer about HDMI distribution as technology has come on a long way and their system could easily be upgraded for HD picture quality, they have asked me to look into what is needed and cost which I will do, all the cat cabling is there already and just needs hooking up. I tested my customer’s TV’s and checked they were happy and the system was doing what they wanted which it was so I packed away, and asked if they minded if I took a couple of pictures for my blog on my website, and they were kind enough to allow me to publish this Thank You.
