1st call Saturday morning, a new TV aerial installation Clacton-On-Sea, we arrived early which is ok with us but not always welcomed with our customers, epically on a Saturday morning.

I chatted to my customer and soon learnt he had an aerial in the loft which did not work and none of the TV’s had a terrestrial digital signal. I enquired why he did not want his aerial outside on his chimney stack, and he had no objections at all. He had inherited the aerial when he bought the house 20 years ago.

After offering various solutions to my customer, he decided a new TV aerial installation fitted to the chimney stack outside, achieving better signal and being higher mounted than the loft. I wanted to use a Log-periodic aerial as the house was situated by the sea, and I guessed it would take a pounding with the strong winds in winter. The log-periodic not having any deflector plates would be a better choice for sea storms and winds.

I fixed the log to an 8ft 1” ½ alloy mast and lashed the chimney stack with a large heavy duty chimney cradle, after all what’s the point of giving the aerial support with a strong mast and then letting the chimney bracket let the whole installation down. The chimney was accessible and we quickly lashed it and fitted the chimney cradle ready for the log.

The log-periodic brought in a beautiful signal which I was extremely happy with and soon will my customer will be too. I cabled the aerial in white coax cable to match the colour of our customer’s house, slipped the tile where a previous cable had been cut and neatly got our cable into the loft.

We fitted an Antiference 8way pro-amp and all we needed to do to connect was, change the 5 aerial leads over from coax to F connections. We re-tuned the houses TV’s and checked the signal was good, which it was, and then maximised the signal on our customer’s Sky dish as the said they regularly lost the satellite signal. Once I looked at the dish connections, I couldn’t believe it worked at all, as there wasn’t hardly any earth at all at the L.N.B end. We checked the satellite signal from the Sky+HD box and we were happy along with our customer. We made our bill and set off to our next call.
