Saturday morning and were off to a new aerial installation Sandon Chelmsford. When we arrived we were horrified to see the roof, high, hipped, a loft conversion and the ground slopped away from the house making it very difficult to put our ladders on.  After chatting with my customer who wanted a new aerial and 3 points, we agreed a price and I gave a time scale for us to complete the work.  After a can of sugar free red bull and a smoke, I decided the best route up to the chimney stack would be by the front door, there is a small flat roof above the window which I could walk along and then walk up the gully and then slide down to the chimney stack.

With my tool belt on complete with a large lashing kit, and a large chimney cradle in my right hand I climbed the ladder and made my way to the chimney stack.  The old aerial was on a large 12ft mast and judging from the spectacular views I couldn’t understand why?  I lashed the chimney stack and wanted to put a log-periodic on an 8ft 1” ½ alloy mast, not for the height, but for the strength of the 1” ½ diameter.  I made up the log, taped it to the mast and put it over my back along with my spectrum analyser and once again climbed up the ladder, shuffled across the flat roof bit, walked up the gully where the 2 roof met and slide down the side to the chimney stack.  Lifting the log into the chimney cradle and carefully pinching up the large U bolts I got it to support the log while I connected the aerial into my spectrum.  As always a perfect choice of aerial as on my screen I could see all 6 digital mux’s at 60db and a perfect shape without interference.

Keeping the spectrum analyser on I tightened the U bolts and secured the aerial permanently, nice and straight and with every db, lovely views but I didn’t want to return.  With 60db my signal was in abundance  and I could happily use an outdoor  4way splitter which has a set loss of 7.5db which is just what I wanted to bring the signal down.  60-7.5= 52.5db at each leg (outlet of the 4way splitter) perfect pictures!

I ran one cable by the stack to the loft bedroom and run twin cable down the side of the house to the 2 bedrooms beneath.  After tuning the 3 TV’s my customers were delighted.  After writing the bill, my next call was Brentwood.
