What a fantastic day summer is here at last.  2nd job and it’s a new aerial & extra point Harlow Essex, when I arrived my customer was waiting for the Virgin engineer to arrive as his box had died and had no telly.  He decided to have an aerial as a back-up for when Virgin next breaks down, and liked the idea of 120 free channels through a new digital TV aerial.  He wanted a point running to his bedroom and sitting room.  We agreed a price and I went to my van for my ladders and set myself up at the rear of the house.

The roof was a lovely gradient and I waked up to the chimney carrying a large 13” 5 brick course chimney cradle and lashing kit.  The sun was shining and the sky was blue, I was so pleased I worked outdoors.  I lashed the chimney and went down to put a Facarro log-periodic together, my customer offered me tea but all I wanted was water as it was hot.  I put the log on an 8ft 1” ½ shiny alloy mast and carried it over my right shoulder along with my tool belt around my waist and my spectrum analyser over my back too.  Sometimes I feel like a donkey laden down with too much then having to climb a ladder and then get to the top of the roof.  I dropped the log into the chimney cradle and plugged it into my spectrum and rotated the aerial 360degres looking at all available signals and this time Crystal Palace London was my winner, with all 6 mux’s coming in at 45db.  I went for a low loss combined inductive splitter with a set loss of -4db making each leg 41db, perfect.

I ran one cable across the roof pinning it down with cut up a lashing wire, to hold the aerial cable in place, and then down the gable end and into the loft.  1st point to bedroom done easy peasy.  The 2nd cable came straight down the roof, again pinned with lashing wire preventing it moving or chaffing, under the guttering and down to the sitting room.  The house was rendered and tacking to the render was near impossible and tested my patients to the limit.  I finally got to the floor, and put the cable through into the sitting room, when the Virgin engineer arrived.  Perfect timing as I was now finished there and only had to connect my cable to my customer’s cable in the loft which feed the bedroom wall socket.  I connected the new TV in the bedroom to my signal and set the new TV up and tested the channels which of course all worked beautifully.

I cleared up and packed away, wrote a bill and set off to Chelmsford for my next call.
