BT youview

Monday afternoon and the temperature is far too hot for us, 30degres on a roof is hard but knowing you have to go in to your customer’s loft isn’t something you look forward to!   When we arrive I spotted my customer’s aerial was a B Group aerial which was coming off of Sudbury Anglia, when the digital change over completed Sudbury moved from a B Group to a wide band transmitting 3 digital mux’s at the top band, my customer’s aerial could only see the ones in the B band and could not get the other half of the channels due to their aerial group.  After chatting to my customer I soon learned they wanted London, and I knew they needed a new aerial to receive London’s digital signal.

I gave a price for the new BT youview aerial and stated I needed to go on their roof and take some test reading with my test aerial and spectrum analyser to see if I could get a good London signal, my prices were accepted so we got the ladders off of the van and made our way to the chimney on top of the roof.  We used a Facarro log-periodic w/b aerial on an 8ft 1” ½ alloy mast to take the digital signal reading and although all of the digital mux’s were even they were low on the dB side 25db on all six.  I went back down to my van and fitted the log to a 10ft 1” ½ alloy mast and was rather happy with all 6 digital mux’s now reading 35db, perfect for a masthead pre-amp to lift the signal slightly.

I lashed the chimney stack using a galvanised 13” 5 brick course chimney cradle ensuring support for the 10ft mast and light weight log aerial.  With the new aerial now beamed in to London we neatly tacked our new cable down the chimney stack and taped it to the old aerial coax so we could quickly find it in our customer’s degree loft. Luckily for us our customer had a way dB w/b masthead pre-amp fitted in their loft so fantastic all around, no extra cost to our customer and we had the gain we wanted with our London signal.  Once we had connected our new aerial coax cable to our customer’s  6way masthead all we need to do was check the signal at the floor and make sure no signal loss was occurring, which is wasn’t so we re-tuned our customer’s BT youview box and admired our perfect pictures.  Our customers were over the moon and we could now write our bill and get back in the air conditioned van swish!
